What is Toyota Safety Sense (TSS) and is it worth it?

With the newer Toyota models making their debut you are sure to notice that the majority of them have the Toyota Safety Sense package and in some models like the 2017 Toyota Corolla Toyota Safety Sense comes standard at no additional cost. The Toyota Safety Sense features are not an additional package that you have to add on at an additional cost. But what exactly is Toyota Safety Sense? Toyota Safety Sense is a package of safety features, exclusive to Toyota models, designed to enhance the safety of drivers, passengers, other vehicles on the road, and pedestrians. With the hope of decreasing the amount of avoidable accidents on the road Toyota Safety Sense supports driver awareness in attempts to make every driving experience a safer one.

Toyota Safety Sense comes in two packages depending on the specific Toyota model: Toyota Safety Sense C for compact vehicles and Toyota Safety Sense P for midsize and larger vehicles. TSS-C features Pre-Collision System with Vehicle Detection, Lane Departure Alert, and Automatic High Beams. TSS-P includes additional safety features like the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection Function, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist function,  and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.


Here is a breakdown about the core Toyota Safety Sense features:

Pre-Collision System


Pre-Collision System

Pre-Collision System uses cameras and lasers mounted in the front of the vehicle to detect vehicles up ahead. If the system feels that the car is too quickly approaching on of these vehicles it will alert the driver to slow down. If the driver does not respond the system will automatically apply to break to try to lessen the impact of avoid the collision all together.

Lane Departure Alert


Lane Departure Alert

Lane Departure Alert uses visual and audio alerts to warn the driver if the vehicle is unintentionally deviating from the lane so the driver can safely straighten out the vehicle. Paired with Electronic Power Steering the system can make small corrections to guide the vehicle back into the correct lane.

Automatic High Beams


Automatic High Beams

Using in-vehicle cameras the Automatic High Beams System detects headlight of oncoming vehicles and taillights of vehicles ahead to automatically switch between low beams and high beams. This system to helps the driver stay focused on the road while maintaining ultimate visibility without shining bright lights onto other drivers.

Dynamic Radar Cruise Control


Dynamic Radar Cruise Control

Dynamic Cruise Control allows the driver to continue to enjoy the convenience of cruise control without having to keep resetting due to the speed of other drivers. This system adds vehicle-to-vehicle distance control to adjust speed to keep a safe distance between the driver and other vehicles on the road.
